Nothing New About Yellow
One of the cornerstone teachings of Ken Wilber's Integral Theory is the concept of Spiral Dynamics. This concept posits that humans go thru an inherent developmental process, not merely physically, but mentally and philosophically as well.
To become a physical "adult" is merely the first step in human evolution. While the order of the steps are more or less pre set, the upper limits are continually expanding for the species as a whole. Yet there is no guarantee that any specific individual will ever reach the higher levels already attained by other members of his or her society.

The genius of Yellow is not “new paradigms of reality”. That has to wait until Turquoise. The unique perspective of Yellow is the ability to clearly perceive the strengths and weaknesses of each First Tier meme. And to apply the wisdom of each tier in synergistic combination with the wisdom of each of the other First Tier memes.
For instance, Beige meme….
The priority of Beige is “Survival First“. So Yellow says YES !, survival first. But not just the survival of a small Beige family or Purple tribe, the survival of the human race as a whole.
Purple wants to support the tribe, and Yellow is on board with this, as long as we all realize that the ultimate “tribe” is the human race itself.
From Red meme, Yellow takes the willingness to act with violent Military Force. But not for Red’s territorial aggression, only to protect and free the victims of dictatorship and religious and racial oppression. {See Green}…
And of course to protect the whole developmental Spiral from being taken hostage by a Red or Blue meme totalitarian force. {See Orange}….
From Blue comes Family Values. No, not praying together in the evening or censoring cable TV. The value of supporting reproduction and the raising of children. Because without them the race ceases to survive, and it’s survival first, remember? And the MGM has nearly destroyed, not merely the family unit, but the very biological program to have and raise children. To the point that, despite immigration, the rate of reproduction in the EU is only half the replacement rate, and still falling. With the rest of the world following this trend.
Orange meme is the genius of political and economic success. (What’s that howling I hear in the background?). It is the Orange meme that has brought prosperity to much of the planet. Wiped out the plagues and prevented most infectious diseases. Produced enough food to feed the over 6.5 Billion of “us”. Lifted nations like South Korea and Chile out of poverty.The impoverished parts, from to Afghanistan to Darfur to Palestine, mostly survive on aid given by the Western Orange countries.
And are unable to provide for themselves because they reject Orange meme perspectives within their own societies !
Just ask the average Chinese if s/he thinks Free Market Capitalism and Globalization is ruining their lives. Without them, s/he’d still been bending over knee deep in a rice paddy, making $40 a month, instead of making products for WalMart, for 15 times more. Of course, for those still living beyond the reach of Global Capitalism, things are still bleak.
In fact, in a recent poll asking is “Free Market Capitalism the Ultimate Economic System”, the Chinese said Yes by 2 to 1, and the French said “Non“ by 2 to 1. No wonder unemployment in France has been over 10% for the past ten years. Despite a declining population….
Oh, and Orange science too. Such as using small amounts of DDT on the walls of 4th world huts once a year, which reduces the death toll from Malaria by literally Millions per year. Sure, the Greens say “they care”, but the Orange’s get the job done. When Green will let them, that is, and right now Green won’t. So those Millions do die from Malaria every year, even though Orange has a cheap, easy and safe solution….
Finally, need I mention the Orange meme attitude of “in defense of civilization”, by force of arms when necessary. {see Beige, Purple, and Red}…
Green contributes equality of opportunity and sensitivity to the needs of others to Yellow. Not over sensitivity to any possible hurt feeling, that’s MGM. Compassion for those who are being oppressed by brutal dictatorships and totalitarian regimes.
Compassion for women in Islamic countries who are forbidden from learning to read. Compassion for those who are suppressed and even murdered for belonging to the “wrong” religion. Compassion for gays in “traditional societies” who face death for coming out. Compassion for……
Active compassion means freeing people from political, religious and ideological restraints. By force when necessary (see Red and Orange).
“The pursuit of happiness” as defined by the individual, with Green’s insight that there is no one “right” way to live.
And the humility of realizing one can be wrong, and the necessity of reversing course when one finds that one is heading in the opposite direction of one’s goal…
To be Yellow means to include the best of it all, and to synthesize all of this into one harmoniously embracing perspective…..
So there is something new about Yellow after all, just not uniquely new. Even though it doesn’t bring any new perspectives to the table on it’s own, it’s ability to choose and synthesize the best, and exclude the worst, of the First Tier memes is truly a step up….
